Honestly, I hadn’t even really been considering it. But seeing Lyric so downtrodden, so down on herself … it’s not like her. She’s been bummed about boys before, disappointed about things not working out, sure, but this … this feels more serious somehow. Like she’s actually wondering if there’s something deeply wrong with her life, and … I don’t know. I can’t stand to see that.

Not to mention, everything I said about Zoey is true. It’s a little more disconcerting than I let on to Lyric. Zoey and I have a lot in common on the surface but when we’re together, the chemistry is way off. The more we talked, the more I found I wanted to just hang out with her. Like a friend … or a sister. Someone I respect and like, but not someone who gets the fires going. And the more we hung out, the more it seemed like Zoey felt that way, too. Which, obviously, is a problem. Maybe some more “date” time with Lyric will help me figure this out.

I hold up my phone. “Eli and Ava just announced they’re eloping two weekends from now. No wedding planner, no big wedding. They just want to have a destination wedding in London with their closest friends. Get married in a little chapel, nothing big, but have a nice party afterward. And it’s during spring break, so all of us academia nerds can go. It’s gonna be a mad rush to get everything booked and ready, but I think we can do it.”

I whistle. “Wow. That’s huge. I mean, isn’t that what most of their fights have been about until now?”

“Yup. Maybe that’s why they’re doing this. It’s a little bit of what Ava wanted—a destination wedding—and a little bit of what Eli wanted—a smaller price tag.” I shrug.

Lyric considers this and then nods appreciatively. “I like that. They’re already compromising like a married couple. So what’s the proposition?”

“Well, Eli wants to invite me, Templeton, and Jonas.”

“Of course.” Lyric picks up her previously abandoned lemon square and takes a big bite.

“And I thought you could go with me as my plus one.”

She stares at me and then sets the rest of her dessert down again. “Really? Why? Won’t Eli mind? I’m not a close friend.”

I smile at the barrage of questions. “Nah, he’s cool with it. He said we could all bring whoever we wanted. Besides, he and Ava both like you. As for the why … more tutoring. This could be really useful for you. And me,” I rush to add, not wanting her to mistake my offer for charity. “I mean, neither of us are well versed in what to do in uber-romantic situations like a destination wedding, right?”

Lyric considers this, tapping one finger on her pointy chin. “Yeah, but … isn’t that kind of like jumping into the deep end of the pool before you can float? You saw how I totally bombed at Pepper Tony. If a casual pizzeria we go to
